Douglas Warner Gorsline

born Rochester, New York, 1913; died Venarey-Les Laumes, France, 1985

BiographyDouglas Warner Gorsline trained at the Yale School of Art and the Art Students League of New York. In the 1940s he switched from an emphasis on fine art to work as a commercial artist, primarily as a book illustrator. He also wrote and illustrated two of his own books. In the early 1960s he taught at the Art School of the National Academy and then began working for Sports Illustrated. His illustrations also appeared in such magazines as the New Yorker, American Heritage, and Horizon. In 1973, Gorsline became the first American artist to be invited to the People's Republic of China.
