BiographyPaul Sample studied at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire originally focusing on sports and music but after a serious bout with tuberculosis he switched his focus to art as a more sedentary pursuit. In 1925, he moved to California and enrolled at the Otis Art Institute as well as taking private lessons. A year later he joined the faculty at the University of Southern California eventually becoming department chair. He spent his summers painting in Maine and Vermont. In 1938, he moved permanently to New England with his family and became artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College. His specialty became the landscape and everyday life in New England.
