BiographyPainter Rosalyn Powell specialized in floral still lifes using her garden for inspiration. She began drawing as a young child in England. At age 19, she went to Paris and studied portraiture. In 1952, she moved to Seattle where she studied privately with Kenneth Callahan and Jacob Elshin before continuing her painting lessons for two years at the University of Washington. She first exhibited her works at the Gordon Woodside Gallery in Seattle, then in 1970 began showing at Foster White Gallery and Bainbridge Arts and Crafts. Beginning in the 1980s, she was commissioned to create several posters for the Pike Place Market. Powell’s paintings are in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum, The Frye Art Museum, and the Bainbridge Public Library, among others. She received a Washington State Governor’s Award for distinguished service in the arts in 1984 and was honored with a 2004 exhibition at the Chicago Botanical Garden.
