Martin Grelleborn Clifton, Texas, 1954

Martin Grelle was born and still lives in Clifton, Texas, and showed a talent for art at an early age. He was largely self-taught, but his talents were encouraged by his neighbors James Boren and Melvin Warren, members of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). Grelle had his first one man show in 1973 shortly after graduating from high school. He joined the ranks of his mentors when he was elected to the CAA in 1995. Like many of his fellow CAA members, Grelle places a strong emphasis on research and accuracy in his work regardless of whether his subjects are historical or contemporary. Living and working on his ranch just outside his hometown, Grelle’s paintings usually depict the people and landscapes of the Southwest.
