Staub was an abstract painter and photographer. He was born in Switzerland, studied painting in Paris until the Nazi invasion during WWII when he returned home. After working for advertising agencies in Berlin and the United States, Staub joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1967, teaching photography in the school of architecture until his retirement in 1988.

His work was exhibited all over the world including exhibits in Paris, Zurich, Vienna and Ahmedabad, India as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany.
