Joellyn Duesberry

born Richmond, Virginia, 1944; died Greenwood Village, Colorado, 2016
BiographyJoellyn Duesberry is a landscape painter and printmaker. She has painted all over the world but her main areas of focus are the northeast and western United States. In the mid 1980s she moved from Manhattan to Denver, a change that dramatically shifted her method of work. She notes she was attracted to “the architectonic structure underlying western landscape in all seasons.” Her work explores the tension between realism and abstraction.

Duesberry received her BA in art history and painting from Smith College in 1966 and received a Master’s degree from New York University Institute of Fine Arts. In 2005, a PBS documentary was made of her life, work, and creative process titled Joellyn Duesberry: Dialogue with the Artist. She has had numerous solo shows including a 50 year retrospective at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 2011.
