Francis Celentano

BiographyFrancis Celentano earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and spent a year in Rome, painting and traveling in Italy, France, and Spain. He originally painted in an abstract expressionist style but gradually embraced the Op art movement during the 1960s. In 1966, Celentano assumed a full-time teaching position in the School of Art at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he taught for 30 years and is now professor emeritus. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was organized by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in 2010.
