Carl Hall

Carl Hall trained at the Meinzinger School in Detroit before interrupting a promising artistic career to enlist in the Army during World War II. As an infantryman he visited Oregon and fell in love with the landscape, returning there permanently after the war in 1946. He began teaching at Willamette University first as a part-time and then as a full professor, a position he held for 40 years. His works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and Detroit Institute of the Arts as well as numerous regional collections. Despite his national reputation, Hall chose to remain in Salem throughout his career. Willamette University’s Hallie Ford Museum of Art established the Carl Hall Gallery of Pacific Northwest Art in 1998.
