BiographyMargaret Tomkins earned both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles in the 1930s. She arrived in Seattle in 1939 where she taught for several brief periods at the University of Washington. She also taught for a short time at the Spokane Art Center. She had her first solo exhibition in1941 at the Seattle Art Museum. As early as 1939 her work began to be included in national exhibitions and she went on to participate in numerous exhibits regionally as well as at such prestigious institutions as the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
