Mel Curtis

BiographySeattle photographer Mel Curtis received his undergraduate degree in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati. He moved to Washington DC to work as a graphic designer for an architectural firm, where he began taking photographs. In the late 1970s he began pursuing it full time primarily teaching himself through observation and experimentation. From 1981, he pursued an MFA at Ohio University. While there, he taught several courses in both photography and graphic design, and ultimately combined both mediums to produce small edition letterpress books.

In 1984 Curtis moved to Seattle, where he lives to this day, working as an artist, educator and photographer. He has taught design and photography for 6 years at Seattle University, for 2 years at the University of Washington and for 3 years at
the PhotoCenter Northwest School. His work is in the permanent collections
of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Seattle Art Museum and the corporate collections of IBM, AT&T and Microsoft. His work has received numerous awards from the Seattle Design Association, Communication Arts and Print Magazines, as well as AIGA and Photographer's Forum.
