Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro

born Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands, 1830; died Paris, France, 1903
BiographyCamille Pissarro was one of the most innovative of the impressionists; he was among the first to divide his colors into individual tones rather than blending them. He preferred to paint landscapes and strove to convey in each work the sensations he experienced when capturing a scene. To that end, he often recorded the specific weather conditions in place when he painted, as reflected in the titles of his works. Pissarro also was a respected mentor and teacher, counting among his students Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), Paul Cezanne (1839–1906), and Mary Cassatt (1844–1926).
