Whiting Tennis

born East Hampton, Virginia, 1959
BiographyWhiting Tennis graduated from the University of Washington in 1984 with a BFA. His work has been included in group exhibitions throughout the Northwest and in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Boston. Tennis has had one-person gallery exhibitions in New York, Portland, and Seattle and most recently at the Tang Museum, Skidmore College in 2011. He received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1993 and the Arlene Schnitzer Prize in association with the Contemporary Northwest Art Awards exhibition at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon in 2008.

The surfaces of Whiting Tennis’s works are complex collages of found objects and images, paint and pencil, glue and tape—whatever comes to hand. They often are illusionistic, resembling one material but actually made from another.
