Terry Toedtemeier received a bachelor’s degree in earth sciences from Oregon State University in 1969. A self-taught photographer, he played a vital role in the evolution of photography in the Northwest through his own work; his role as the first curator of photography at Portland Art Museum; as a cofounder of the artist-run Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, in 1975; and as a photo historian. Among the many honors Toedtemeier received were two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a Flintridge Foundation Award for Visual Artists. His work is in many prestigious museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
