Jesus Bautista Moroles

born Corpus Christi, Texas, 1950; died Jarrell, Texas, 2015
BiographyJesus Moroles earned an associate degree from El Centro College in Dallas, Texas in 1975, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in 1978. That year he also worked as an apprentice to sculptor Luis Jiménez. Moroles began creating monumental stone works in the late 1980s after a pilgrimage to the marble quarries of Carrara, Italy. Two of his best known public works are the Houston Police Officers Memorial and a 22-foot-high granite sculpture at CBS Plaza in Manhattan across from the Museum of Modern Art. Over two thousand of his works are held in public and private collections in the United States, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and his sculptures have been included in over three hundred museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide. Moroles received the National Medal of Arts in 2008 and the Texas State Artist Award in 2011.
