Charles Lovell received his BS in Photography from East Texas State University and graduated with his MFA in Photography from Central Washington University in 1984. After graduation he began to work as curator and director of art museums and galleries in Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Washington state while also pursuing his fine art photography. He was awarded a residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice, Italy in 2007 where he transitioned from film to digital photography. In 2015 he began working full-time as a documentary and fine art photographer. He has had solo exhibitions of his work in North Carolina, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arizona, and California and participated in over 45 group exhibitions. His work is in the collections of the El Paso Museum of Art, Mint Museum of Art, City of New Orleans, and Photographic Resource, Center, Boston among others.

Among his museum positions, Charles Lovell was curator and director at Tacoma Art Museum.
