Gustave Jean Jacquet

born Paris, France, 1846; died Paris, France, 1909
BiographyGustave Jacquet, a portrait and genre painter, was a student of William Adolphe Bougereau who found his artistic inspiration in the past. He debuted at the Salon in 1865 with a painting entitled La Riverie, painted very much in the style of his teacher. In the subsequent years, however, Jacquet abandoned Bougereau’s style and began painting small-scale canvases depicting sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century scenes. Around the same period, he also turned his attention to portraiture, often dressing his subjects in sixteenth century costumes. He also painted nudes.

In 1875, Jacquet won a first place medal for his work, and in 1879, was decorated by the Legion d’Honneur.
