Jean Charlot

From the age of six, Jean Charlot showed artistic talent and began his formal studies at a young age at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris. In 1922 he moved to Mexico where he became interested in printmaking and began creating color lithographs and woodcuts of scenes from the daily lives of the Mexican people. He moved to the United States in 1930, settling first in Los Angeles then moving to New York where he taught at the Art Students League for many years. In 1949 he began teaching at the University of Hawaii where he remained for 20 years. Charlot specialized in printmaking throughout his career, particularly the art of lithography.
