Raúl Valadez Anguianoborn Guadalajara, Mexico, 1915; died Mexico City, Mexico, 2006

Raul Anguiano started drawing cubist pictures at the age of 5, using movie stars as his first models. He studied at Guadalajara’s Open Air Art School from 1927 until moving to Mexico City in 1934. There he began teaching in primary schools and at the National Autonomous University (UNAM). In 1937 he joined the Revolutionary Writers and Artists League and helped found the Taller Grafica Popular (Popular Graphics Workshop) with Alfredo Zalce and Pablo O'Higgins where artists practiced a graphic style based on Mexico's folk traditions. Just before his death he completed a large mural for East Los Angeles College, California depicting the history of Mexican art. During his lifetime he participated in more than 100 exhibitions in Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, United States, France, Italy, the former Soviet Union, Israel, Germany and Japan.
