Michael Fajansborn Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1947; died Seattle, Washington, 2006

Michael Fajans was fascinated with people—their faces, clothing, movements, and day-to-day lives. He created a number of celebrated murals of everyday people in Seattle, most notably in the federal courthouse. He was a practicioner of a highly detailed, meticulous realist style known as photorealism, photography-like images created in a nonphotograpic medium. Fajans used airbrushing to paint his works applying innumerable thin layers of acrylic to board to achieve a deceptively smooth, glossy surface without visible paint texture or brushstrokes.
