Gwendolyn Knightborn Bridgetown, Barbados, 1913; died Seattle, Washington, 2005
Gwendolyn Knight was born in Barbados, West Indies and came to the U.S. as a child. She first studied art at Howard University then began taking workshops with sculptor Augusta Savage at the Harlem Community Art Center. In the 1930s, Knight worked for the WPA's Federal Art Project. She continued to take classes and workshops while working for Conde Nast diversifying and strengthening her artistic skills.
In 1971, she and her husband Jacob Lawrence relocated to Seattle. She had her first solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in 1976. Tacoma Art Museum had a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2003.
