Alfredo Zalceborn Pátzcuaro, Mexico, 1908; died Morelia, Mexico, 2003

Alfredo Zalce was born in Patzcuaro, Michoacan. He studied at San Carlos Academy in Mexico City then at the Escuela de Talla Directa. Zalce founded the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura in Taxco, Mexico in 1930, and was a co-founder of the Taller Grafica Popular (Popular Graphics Workshop) where he produced many prints addressing social, political, and economic issues.

There have been numerous retrospectives of his work at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City (1948, 1962, 1995); Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City (1981) ; Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago (1987); and Bellas Artes, Mexico City (1995). He received the National Art Award in 2002.
