Paul Landacreborn Columbus, Ohio, 1893; died Los Angeles, California, 1963

Paul Landacre trained at Ohio State University. While a student he contracted an infection that left him crippled for life. Despite this setback he continued his artistic career relocating to Southern California to convalesce and work for an advertising agency. He later quit work as a commercial artist to become an author-illustrator, printmaker, and teacher. Landacre was a particular master of the precise art of wood engraving in which he was self-taught. He is considered America’s pre-eminent wood engraver of the first half of the 20th century.
