John E. Costigan was a self-taught artist. After completing high school, he took a job in New York City as a sketch artist for H. Miner Lithography Company. His job offered him access to a variety of printmaking tools and techniques but he also painted scenes from rural upstate New York where he lived. Costigan became a highly successful artist receiving numerous awards during his lifetime and being elected a full member of the prestigious National Academy of Design. In 1968, the Smithsonian Institution held a retrospective exhibition of his work.
