Ralph Gibsonborn Los Angeles, California, 1939

Ralph Gibson completed his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1958. He began his professional career as an assistant to the renowned social realist photographers Dorothea Lange and then Robert Frank.

He went on to build an internationally successful career. His photographs are in the permanent collection of over one hundred museums, he has published over fifty art books, and his works have been in over two hundred exhibitions worldwide. Gibson has a particular interest in surrealist photography with roots in early 20th century modernism and street photography. He creates images that incorporate everyday fragments with complicated undertones and, through them, he builds narrative meaning.
