Vincent Colyerborn Bloomingdale, New York, 1825; died Darien, Connecticut, 1888
Though he spent most of his career working in New York and Connecticut, Vincent Colyer was noted for his images of the American West and its Native peoples.
From the late 1860s to early 1870s, Colyer traveled extensively through the West and Alaska representing Friends of the Indians, a Quaker organization that advocated for humanitarian treatment of Native peoples. In 1869, he is believed to have visited Oregon and the Washington Territory. Back in his Connecticut studio he painted this idealized image from a combination of sketches and imagination.
