Louise Lewis Gilbertborn Detroit, Michigan, 1900; died Seattle, Washington, 1987

Louise Lewis Gilbert was a painter and printmaker. She studied at the University of Washington and also privately with Mark Tobey and Eustace Ziegler. She was active primarily between Seattle and Alaska where her husband managed a fishing cannery in Prince William Sound. She produced many works based on the fishing industry in the Northwest and Alaska.

Gilbert was a member of the Women Painters of Washington, Northwest Watercolor Society, and Northwest Printmakers Society. For many years, she was the director of the Little Gallery in the Frederick & Nelson Department Store in Seattle.

Seattle Art Museum held a solo exhibition of her work in 1938. She also had work in exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery, the Portland Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
