Johan Barthold Jongkindborn Lattrop, Netherlands, 1819; died La Côte-Saint-André, France, 1891
Johan Jongkind’s early works were painted in dark colors closely following his native Dutch tradition, but after relocating to Paris in 1845, his colors brightened considerably. Jongkind liked to paint outdoors using watercolor to record the effects that changing light and time had on his favorite subjects. He transmitted these interests to his students, most notably the future impressionists Claude Monet and Eugène Louis Boudin.
