Arthur Bowen Daviesborn Utica, New York, 1862; died Florence, Italy, 1928

Arthur B. Davies studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1878 and at the Art Students League in New York in 1887. He was a painter, lithographer and etcher. Though he was associated with the group of artists known as The Eight or Ashcan School who focused on everyday subjects, he preferred allegorical and imaginary subjects.

As president of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, Davies personally selected many of the contemporary European paintings for the landmark 1913 Armory Show, in which six of his own works were exhibited. Davies was also responsible for aiding Alfred H. Barr, Jr. in the foundation of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
