John S. Takeharaborn Sowan, Korea, 1929; died Boise, Idaho, 2009

John S. Takehara grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, Studies at Walla Walla College and Cal-State L.A. led him to a career in graphic design. Mr. Takehara taught at Florida State and Montana State before joining the Boise State University faculty in 1968. He initiated the B.S.U. visiting artist program that introduced area students and teachers to nationally and internationally recognized ceramic artists. He curated the Northwest Ceramics Today Exhibition and produced the documentaries: The Diversity of Australian Ceramics, and The Form of Reflection. Mr. Takehara's inspiring, large-scale porcelain works helped to define clay as ceramic art in the Pacific N.W. during the latter half of the 20th century and is cherished widely by devoted collectors.
