Mian Situ
Mian Situ was born in Canton, China, now known as Guangdong Province. He received his artistic training there, earning a bachelor and a master’s of fine arts from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He went on to teach at the Academy for six years. Situ’s style mixes realism and traditional European painting techniques. He lived in Canada for 10 years before moving to the United States in 1998. He is best known for his depictions of life in rural China, having spent much of his career traveling around rural villages in an effort to depict and preserve their fast-fading traditional ways of life and dress. In recent years the focus of his work has shifted to California landscapes and images of the Chinese immigrant experience in the historic American West. Situ uses the same historical attention to detail in these newer works and has gained much recognition for his western American paintings.
