Jean Baptiste Camille Corotborn Paris, France, 1796; died Paris, France, 1875
Claude Monet once said of Corot “Compared to him, the rest of us are nothing.” Corot is considered one of the fathers of the impressionist movement. Though he did not work in a fully impressionist style, in choosing to paint outdoors in front of his subject and to paint the everyday scenery around him, he opened the eyes of other artists to new ways of painting and new subjects. As well, the shimmering light that pervades his paintings encouraged other artists to lighten their color palettes.
