Clark Hulings
Born in Florida but raised in Spain and New Jersey, Clark Hulings studied at the Art Students League with Frank Reilly before attending Haverford College to earn a degree in physics. He had his first one-man show at the New Mexico Museum of Art in 1945, when he was living in Santa Fe recovering from tuberculosis. He attempted a brief career as a portrait painter in Louisiana before working as a freelance illustrator in New York in the 1950s. Hulings decided to move to Santa Fe in 1972 and devoted himself to easel painting. He created scenes from his travels all over the world but had an affinity for depicting the simplicity and dignity of a working life. Hulings became a charter member of the National Academy of Western Art in 1973 and won its first Prix de West award.
