Clyde Aspevigborn Rudyard, Montana, 1951

Born in northern Montana and raised in a farming community, Clyde Aspevig pursued painting from a young age. He attended Eastern Montana College in the early 1970s and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in 1976. Aspevig briefly worked as a middle school teacher in Oregon but soon decided to pursue painting full time instead. He began painting representational and rugged western landscapes, and in 1982 became the first Montana resident since Charles Russell to exhibit at the Grand Central Galleries in New York City. He currently resides in Montana, usually working outdoors making oil studies that he turns into larger compositions in his studio. Aspevig describes himself as a composer, incorporating music and rhythm in his paintings to create a cohesive and harmonious composition. He also strongly believes in conservation and works to communicate a respect for the land in his paintings.
