William Gropperborn New York, New York, 1897; died Manhasset, New York, 1977
William Gropper was a painter, printmaker, and cartoonist whose work mostly focused on social concerns such as strikes, worker’s rights, and urban poverty. Many of his images had a satirical edge. Gropper worked primarily for the New York Tribune, Vanity Fair, and the activist publication New Masses but also painted commissions for both private clients and for government buildings under the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project. In addition, Gropper illustrated books and created prints for publication. He trained at the National Academy of Design in New York and also with the leader of the American realist movement, Robert Henri.
