George Tsutakawa
George Tsutakawa studied art at the University of Washington from 1932 to 1937. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1941 and served with distinction as a Japanese language instructor. In 1950 Tsutakawa received his master of fine arts degree from the University of Washington. He played a central role in the Northwest arts community as a professor at the University of Washington from 1947 to 1976 and as an influence on local artists including prominent Northwest painters Mark Tobey and Morris Graves. He created nearly 60 public fountains for locations throughout the Northwest and nationally including one for the cloister of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. in 1968. In 1981, Tsutakawa received the Order of the Rising Sun Award, Fourth Class, from the Emperor of Japan. The University of Washington awarded him the Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus award in 1986, and he received doctorate degrees from Seattle University and Whitman College in 1988.
