Honoré Daumierborn Marseille, France, 1808; died Valmondois, France, 1879

Honoré Daumier was best known for his work as a lithographer, caricaturist, and political satirist though he also was a social realist painter. Working during the upheavals in France during the First and Second Empires and First and Second Republics, he was often in trouble with both sides for his satires.

He was one of the first French artists to paint images of the everyday people of France going about their daily lives but he built his reputation on his images that poked fun at political figures, social policies, and the bourgeoisie.
