Henry Pitz

Henry Pitz showed a talent for drawing at a young age. He studied art at local schools and also took classes on weekends. He eventually won a scholarship to study at the Philadelphia Museum School where he learned illustration. After serving in World War I, he returned to Philadelphia and began teaching, then found work as a professional illustrator. In 1928 he was asked to write and illustrate the first of 18 books, most of which were “how-to” manuals for art students. He also became a regular contributor to the magazine American Artist and taught illustration at the Philadelphia Museum School, a position he held for twenty-six years.
