Fernando Castro Pachecoborn Mérida, Mexico, 1918; died Mérida, Mexico, 2013

Fernando Pacheco was born in Merida, the capital of Yucatan, Mexico. During the early 1930s he studied in the School of Plastic Arts of the City of Merida. After leaving school he became a professional painter, creating murals for a number of schools in Yucatan and also teaching drawing and painting in Merida. In 1940 he organized the Independent School of Plastic Arts in Merida but three years later relocated to Mexico City. There he continued to teach and execute commissions for murals, illustrations for children’s books and other projects. He also began to exhibit his works internationally and travel outside of Mexico. Like many of his fellow artists in Mexico City Pacheco joined the Taller Grafica Popular (Popular Graphics Workshop) creating prints with regional and social themes. He returned to Merida in 1971.
