Peppino Mangraviteborn Lipari, Italy, 1896; died Westport, Connecticut, 1978

Peppino Mangravite came to New York at the age of fourteen with his father. He had begun his art training in Italy; in New York he studied at Cooper Union, Broadmoor Art Academy, and the Art Students League. He became an important teacher starting at the Hansen School of Fine Arts in New York, then later at Sarah Lawrence College, Cooper Union, and Columbia University among others. He also wrote for numerous publications including The Arts, Progressive Education, and American Magazine of Art. By focusing on images of the American heartland he became one of the best-known American Scene artists.
