Paul Jacouletborn Paris, France, 1902; died Karuizawa, Japan, 1960

As a young boy Paul Jacoulet moved to Tokyo when his father took a teaching position with the Japanese government. He was fluent in Japanese, French and English and deeply attracted to Japanese woodblock printmaking as an artistic medium. Jacoulet did not carve or print his works himself but made drawings and watercolors that were transformed into woodblock prints by carving and printing masters. He primarily chose subjects reminiscent of Japanese woodblocks or other Asian artforms.
