Ono no Komachi was a celebrated poet and beauty of the Heian Period (784–1185). Famed for her waka Japanese-style poetry, she was considered one of the Sanjūrokkasen (Thirty-Six Female Poetry Immortals). She is seen here in the many-layered robes of the Heian court, seated at her writing table under a blossoming cherry tree whose petals are caught in a gust of wind
